Once again North Korea is saber rattling with attempts to test longer and longer range missiles. America and the world has a long history of essentially appeasing the Kim family and the pattern just keeps repeating itself. North Korea builds and tests weapons and threatens the US and (more realistically) its neighbors like Japan and South Korea. At the same time, North Korea has been known to make money by manufacturing and selling illegal drugs and counterfeiting.
President Trump is an unknown factor in this little dance. He does not have enough political history for the Korean leaders to make an assessment of what he will do in response to their provocations. He seems to have no problem showing force in response to their actions but, as yet, no military confrontation has taken place and so it could all be bluff and bluster on either side. What remains to be seen is whether or not Donald Trump can break away from the dance and take it all in a new direction with no loss of life on either side.
I say with no loss of life because I watched a video today that reminded me that the North Korean people, at least the common folks, seem to live in another world. The video I saw is embedded here and I think everyone should watch it. It features two North Korean defectors talking about their lives in North Korea and then since they defected and it is a real reminder of how good we have it here in the west.
I think that we have the opportunity to get to know people all over the world and to understand them. As a result, I think we should be much less willing to go to war against the people of a country and more willing to continue our recent trend of just eliminating leaders.
